When it comes to elevating your home, few details make as dramatic of an impact as properly installed curtains. Whether you’re refreshing a single room or embarking on a full home redesign, the right window treatments instantly add height, softness, and sophistication. As an interior designer, I’ve seen curtains completely transform the feel of a room—and the good news is, with the right approach, you can achieve the same luxurious look in your own space.
Below, I’m sharing designer-approved tips to help you install curtains correctly and beautifully. And of course, if you ever want expert guidance or full-service design support, my team and I are here to help you create a polished, cohesive look.
Tip #1: Hang Curtains High to Make Your Ceilings Look Taller

One of the most common design mistakes is mounting curtain rods too close to the window frame.
To instantly elevate your room:
- Install the rod 4–6 inches below the ceiling or as high as possible.
- The higher placement draws the eye upward, making the ceilings feel taller.
- High-hung curtains create a clean, elegant line that instantly modernizes the room.
Designer Tip: If you have low ceilings, use extra-long panels to elongate the space even further.
Tip #2: Extend the Rod Wider Than the Window

To make your windows appear larger and allow maximum natural light:
Extend the rod 8–12 inches beyond each side of the window frame.
This ensures the curtains frame the window rather than block it.
The result: a wider, more open feel—without replacing a single window.
Bonus: This technique keeps your drapery panels from crowding the glass when open, giving you the brightest room possible.
I recommend mounting the brackets several inches away from the side of the window so that the curtain fabric will not block the light on either side. This way, you are allowing for the maximum amount of window glass to be visible, rather than hiding the window. Not only will this placement make the window seem larger, but it will also allow the maximum amount of natural light to flow into the room.
Tip #3: Choose the Right Curtain Length for a High-End Look

Length matters more than most people realize. For a luxury, custom-inspired finish:
- Opt for floor-length curtains that either kiss the floor or slightly puddle.
- Avoid curtains that fall short—they visually cut off the room and feel unfinished.
Designer Tip: If you’re unsure or working with uneven floors, aim for a gentle “kiss” to maintain a tailored look.
When it comes time for you to hang window treatments in your home, please do not underestimate these tips! This advice will go a long way towards creating a tailored and effortlessly elegant look for your home, and also enhance an overall relaxing vibe.
