Historic homes have a way of telling stories—layered, imperfect, and rich with character. In Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood, where early 1900s architecture lines tree-shaded streets, one such home was ready for its next chapter. When our client, a successful female attorney with a discerning eye and a demanding schedule, reached out to us, she had a clear vision: elevate the sophistication of her home while preserving its soul.
She wanted a thoughtful transformation—one that respected the home’s history, enhanced daily living, and created an environment equally suited for quiet evenings and elegant entertaining. She entrusted us with a full-service renovation and furnishing of her living and dining rooms, spaces that would set the tone for the entire home.
What followed was a deeply collaborative, detail-driven process rooted in intention, craftsmanship, and restraint. The result is a calm, elevated interior that feels timeless, functional, and unmistakably personal.

Designing for a Life Well Lived
Our client’s professional life is fast-paced and intellectually demanding, and she was clear that her home should feel like a retreat. Calm was essential—but never at the expense of character. Sophistication, for her, meant layers of texture, thoughtful details, and spaces that felt finished without being precious.
As with all of our projects, we began by listening. How did she use the rooms day to day? How often did she entertain? What pieces mattered to her? Which elements of the home felt like assets, and which felt like obstacles?
Like many historic homes, this one came with a familiar set of challenges: dated lighting, inefficient layouts, and prominent radiators that disrupted both furniture placement and visual flow. Rather than treating these as problems to be erased, we saw opportunities—chances to design custom solutions that would feel intentional rather than corrective.
Our guiding principle throughout the project was balance: honoring the architecture while introducing modern comfort, blending beauty with utility, and creating moments of quiet luxury that reveal themselves slowly over time.

The Living Room: Where History Meets Modern Craftsmanship
The living room is the heart of the home, and in this case, it was also where some of the most impactful design decisions were made.
One of the first conversations centered around the original marble fireplace. While its presence was undeniable, it also carried the visual weight and quirks typical of early-20th-century construction. Replacing it would have been easier—but easier isn’t always better.
We encouraged our client to preserve the fireplace, reframing it not as an outdated element, but as a character-rich anchor for the space. Once restored and thoughtfully styled, it became a captivating focal point—one that grounds the room in history while allowing the surrounding design to feel fresh and intentional.
To address both storage needs and create architectural balance, we designed and built custom living room built-ins. These were not standard cabinetry, but fully bespoke millwork pieces tailored to the proportions of the room and the realities of a historic home.
One of the key challenges was integrating the existing radiators, which are often visually intrusive and limit furniture placement. Our solution was both functional and refined: a custom radiator cover with brushed brass fence inserts.. These details allow heat to circulate efficiently while transforming a once-awkward necessity into a design feature. The brass introduces a subtle warmth and patina, echoing the home’s era while elevating the overall aesthetic.
The built-ins provide concealed storage, display space for curated objects, and a sense of architectural permanence that the room previously lacked. Every line, finish, and proportion was carefully considered to feel as though it had always belonged there.

Furnishings That Invite You In
With the architectural framework established, we turned our attention to furnishings—pieces that would support both daily comfort and entertaining.
Rather than filling the room with trends, we focused on timeless silhouettes and high-quality materials. Upholstered seating was selected for longevity and comfort, with custom pieces fabricated by Blawnox Upholstery to ensure the perfect balance of scale and softness. Leather accents from Garrett Leather added depth and durability, aging beautifully over time.
Natural textures played a critical role here. Soft textiles, layered rugs, and tactile finishes create a sense of warmth that counterbalances the room’s more formal architectural elements. The goal was to make the space feel approachable and lived-in, not staged.
Artwork and accessories were curated with equal care. Family heirlooms were thoughtfully incorporated, allowing personal history to coexist seamlessly with new design elements. Each piece was given room to breathe, reinforcing the idea that sophistication doesn’t require excess—it requires intention.

The Dining Room: Elevation Through Illusion and Intention
If the living room was about grounding the space in history, the dining room was about visual expansion and versatility.
One of the most transformative changes came through lighting. By introducing recessed lighting, we were able to create the illusion of higher ceilings, instantly making the room feel more open and contemporary without altering its original structure. This subtle intervention had an outsized impact, improving both ambiance and functionality.
Seating was reconfigured to better suit the way our client entertains. The new layout allows for more fluid movement and accommodates both intimate dinners and larger gatherings with ease.
Along the window wall, we designed a dramatic floor-to-ceiling built-in that serves multiple purposes. Visually, it draws the eye upward, reinforcing the sense of height and architectural presence. Functionally, it provides storage, display, and a sunny window bench—one of the most beloved features of the home.
True to form, even this bench carries a hidden secret: another concealed radiator. As in the living room, custom ventilation ensures performance without compromising aesthetics. The result is a space that feels both generous and efficient, where every square inch works hard without feeling overworked.

A Palette Rooted in Nature and Memory
Color and material selection throughout the project was intentionally restrained. We leaned into a palette inspired by natural elements—soft neutrals, warm metals, layered woods—allowing texture and form to take center stage.
This quiet backdrop created the perfect canvas for meaningful personal touches. Artwork referencing our client’s New Jersey roots was thoughtfully placed, adding narrative and emotional resonance to the space. These pieces don’t compete with the design; they enrich it, reminding us that the most beautiful homes are reflections of the people who live in them.
Windows were upgraded in collaboration with Lachina Windows, improving energy efficiency while maintaining the home’s historic integrity. Natural light now moves more freely through the space, enhancing the carefully chosen finishes and creating a sense of ease throughout the day.

The Power of Collaboration
Projects like this succeed because of collaboration—between client and designer, and among a trusted team of vendors and craftspeople.
Integrated Contracting played a critical role in executing the renovation with precision and respect for the home’s original structure. From custom millwork to construction coordination, their expertise ensured that every detail was realized as envisioned.
Each vendor contributed to a seamless result, reinforcing our belief that thoughtful design is never a solo effort. It’s a conversation—between disciplines, materials, and ideas.

A Home That Feels Elevated, Functional, and Personal
The completed living and dining rooms are a study in quiet confidence. Nothing feels overdone, yet every element has purpose. The spaces support our client’s lifestyle effortlessly, whether she’s hosting colleagues for dinner or enjoying a quiet evening at home.
